If we were Villains

by M.L.Rio

This is the first book I finished this year, I actually started it last year so it's a bit cheaty of me to include in this year's list but frankly I don't really care.
Anyway, this book has always meant quite a bit to me, since I read it for the first time during quite an important time in my life.
Second anyway, this is a really good book. The thing about it that intrigues me most is the way it incorporates the structure of a Shakespearian play into the story. The things that happen almost coincide exactly with the play the group is practicing and performing in that moment. This is especially clear in James' drunken rant nearing the end of the novel. I wanted to figure this whole thing out but decided against it for now, considering I am lazy. But still it is a really interesting structure the author choose.
Another thing I enjoyed about this book is the gayness of it. I noticed it even more reading it the second time. The weird homoerotic friendship between Oliver and James is amusing and heartbreaking, and my heart certainly does wish James is still alive, and Oliver searching for him. The snippets of Alexander and Collin's romance is also quite cute. Also I love Alexander he is great.
Anyway great book, go read it if you're a dark academia loser.
